The two popular online app stores Apple’s App Store and Google Play both contain hundreds of thousands of software applications for laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Both online stores shows impressive penetration and revenue data for US and non-US downloaders and users.
Its really interesting to note that Google Play for Android users show a steady increase. In fact, over 50% of US smartphone owners use Google Play to download apps versus only over 30% taken by Apple iOS App Store. Other countries shows similar data though some users geared more toward tablet use.
On the revenue side, Apple’s iOS platform side generates bigger share of the income compared to Android’s Google Play. The overall conclusion is quite clear, although Apple’s global market share is smaller than Android’s market penetration, iOS app developers still make more money developing for the iOS platform.
The United States, Japan, UK and Australia generated the most app revenue for both platforms. And the Apple App Store generates five times more revenue than Google Play online store across 20 of the largest countries carrying both app stores.
Some of the popular apps available in both platforms are Tetris by Electronic Arts, Word with Friends by Zynga, UNO by Gameloft, Monster Quest by GREE, Inc. , Slotomania by Playtika LTD, Bubble Mania by TeamLava, Bad Piggies by Rovio Entertainment Ltd, DragonVale by Backflip Studios.
